posted Oct 18, 2012, 2:30 AM by news reporter

Today meeting a Parliamentary panel to put forth their views on the Lokpal Bill, activist Anna Hazare and his associates demanded a new Bill and suggested the Standing Committee should reject the Government's Lokpal Bill draft.

Anna Hazare's team says the government has drafted a Bill that ensures the Lokpal or ombudsman has no real powers. In protest, Anna Hazare has said he is determined to begin a hunger fast on August 16 in the Capital.

Anna also says that "We are doing this for the public, for the country," "There is nothing in the Bill which has been introduced in Parliament. It is just a show off. It has been drafted just to tell people that we have a law to fight corruption. It will be of no use," Hazare added.

Despite of Hazare's protest the government has chosen to present its ministers' version in Parliament. And Anna Hazare has said he is determined to begin a hunger fast on August 16 in the Capital.

Every healthy Indian mind should support Anna as Congress and UPA want to put LOKPAL in dustbin and they are simply delaying the issue through various drama to mislead Indian people say critics of Congress.

Initiating a discussion on effective steps to curb rising incidents of violation of human rights in the country, the CPM leader hit out at the West Bengal chief minister, without naming her, for arresting a farmer for questioning her at a public rally on rise in fertiliser prices.

Acharia said the chief minister dubbed the farmer as a Maoist and immediately got him arrested.

He pointed out that the Press Council of India chairman Markandeya Katju had described the chief minister as “dictatorial, intolerant and whimsical”.

Maintaining that the right to expression was a fundamental right, Acharia said this was a violation of human rights.

He also recounted the incident where in a Jadavpur University professor was arrested for circulating a cartoon.

Acharia said when the professor was manhandled by “TMC hoodlums”, the police picked him up and not the miscreant.
